Mile-a-Minute Preemie / Baby Afghan

Approximate Size:   17" X 17" ( 30" X 30" )
Materials:   Preemie (shown): baby yarn: 3 ounces main color (MC) and 1 ounce contrasting color (CC). Baby: sport yarn: 18 ounces of varigated or a combination of colors desired;
Crochet hooks size F and G (H and I);

Center Shells:
With larger hook and CC, ch 5, join with sl st to form ring.
Row 1 (right side):   Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in ring.
Rows 2 - 23 (35):   Ch 3, turn, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in ch 2 sp, dc in top of ch 3. Fasten off at end of last row.

Edging:
Rnd 1:   Change to smaller hook. With MC, sl st into space at end of last row, ch 3, dc, ch 1, 2 dc in same sp; * work 3 dc in space at end of each row to last row; 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc (corner shell)*; 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in beg ring (end shell); corner shell in sp at end of row, repeat from * to *, work end shell in end shell; join with sl st in top of ch 3.

Rnd 2:   Turn, sl st in sp between corner shell and end shell, ch 3, 2 dc; end shell in end shell; * 3 dc in space between end shell and corner shell; corner shell in corner shell; 3 dc in space between each group of 3 dc*; corner shell in corner shell; 3 dc in next sp; end shell in end shell; repeat from * to *. Join in top of ch 3.

Rnd 3:   Turn, sl st into space between 3 dc and corner shell, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp; corner shell in corner shell; continue same as Rnd 2. Join in top of beg ch 3. Fasten off.

Make 4 (5) more strips.

Joining:
With wrong sides tog, using smaller hook and MC, sc strips tog from ch 1 to ch 1 along sides working in back loops only. Fasten off. Repeat for each strip. Do not fasten off at the end of last joining.

Border:
Continuing around the entire outer edge of afghan, working in back lps only, hdc in each dc and 2 hdc in each ch st of corner and end shells. Fasten off. Weave in all ends securely.
